Are Ebooks and paper-books complementary or substitutable? Jean Wandimi Presentation

During my recent presentation for my master's program, I delved into a topic that's increasingly pertinent in today's publishing landscape: the relationship between ebooks and paper books. Titled "Are Ebooks and Paper-books Complementary or Substitutable?", my presentation aimed to unravel the complexities surrounding the distribution and pricing strategies within the book industry.

In today's market, marketers often grapple with where to position ebooks within their release strategy. Traditionally, a hardcover book followed by a paperback version has been the norm. However, this strategy raises concerns about pricing dynamics and consumer behaviour.

One of the key points I highlighted in this presentation was the distinction between high-value and low-value consumers. By releasing a hardcover edition first, publishers may attract high-value consumers who are willing to pay a premium for early access to the content. However, this strategy may deter low-value consumers who prefer to wait for the cheaper paperback version.

Moreover, I discussed the inherent limitations of both hardcover books and ebooks. Hardcover books incur significant fixed costs in terms of initial publishing, which may not always align with the varying perceived value of the content among different consumer segments. On the other hand, ebooks face challenges in extracting value, as publishers strive to find the optimal pricing strategy to cater to diverse consumer preferences.
